Q

How do you calculate oxidation number?

A

Set rules for certain elements, oxidation number for a:

  • free element is 0
  • fluorine is -1
  • group 1 metals is +1
  • group 2 metals is +2
  • oxygen is +2 except -1 in H2O2, +2 in OF2
  • hydrogen is +1 in non metals, -1 in metal

Add up to 0 in a compound
