Lecture 14 Human Factors 3 Flashcards

1
Q

What are some factors that contribute to human performance?

A

Situation awareness - consist observation of environmental cues and updating precious information.
Workload.
Stress/ Motivation - intrinsic (joy from the task) or extrinsic (reward or external factors influencing you to complete the task).
Trust.
Decision-making.
Human error.

Q
What is meant in the skills model by:
Conscious incompetence
Conscious competence
Unconscious incompetence
Unconscious competence
A

Conscious incompetence- doesn’t know how to perform a skill and is well aware that they don’t know how but is willing to learn and embrace mistakes.
Conscious competence- is able to perform the skill but it requires thought and concentration.
Unconscious incompetence- doesn’t know how to perform the skill and doesn’t necessary recognise that they don’t know how to perform the skill.
Unconscious competence- can perform the skill and can do so without cognitive resources. Becomes second nature or automatic.

Q

What were the 3 phrases implemented in the design and evaluation of the new ADDS chart?

A
Phrase 1:
-assess 25 prior charts
- survey professionals for chart preferences
Phrase 2:
-design a new chart
Phrase 3:
- evaluate the new chart

Q

What were some design problems with previous charts?

A

Font- inappropriate type and sizing
Use of colour - ambiguous meanings, what if colour blind?
Poor layout of vital signs - all over the shop
Contained irrelevant or unnecessary information - could circle a response rather than write a pragraph

Q

What were some design aspects of the new ADDS chart?

A

Info displayed in decreasing level of importance (9 vital signs).
Consistent font and formatting.
Clear graphs for vital signs with clear and consistent scaling used.

Q

What did the heuristic analysis of previous charts aim to do and find?

A

A systematic review of 25 previous charts for medical observation was performed to identify common human factors errors within the chart. Found that on average each chart had 48 errors these included: poor grammar, not using Australian spelling, jargon used, poor use of abbreviations.

Q

Describe the experiment used to interpret if the new ADDS chart was better than previous medical charts?

A

Had novice and experienced medical staff look at charts to observe 13 sets of observations. A timer began as soon as a p began looking at a chart. They then had to identify if the vital signs were either normal or abnormal and state which one had the abnormality. The number of errors made and the time taken to identify these errors were recorded. It was found that compared with four other charts the ADDS chart was much better at lowing errors and reaction times towards the chart observation. They concluded that chart design had a substantial impact on performance.

Q

When looking at STEMI patients (heart attack patients) how did a simulation study help improve balloon times ?

A

Had health professionals work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and work through 4 in situ simulations. After each simulations the teams participated in a facilitated debrief to discuss process, teamwork, communication issues and areas for improvement. Times from door to balloon were recorded 6 months pre and post intervention. Results indicated that both the mean and median reaction times from door to balloon significantly decreased post intervention. They concluded that the process of care simulation helped build teamwork and fostered relationships that improves service delivery as a whole
