Dehydration

A

excessive loss of water from the body’s tissues. This causes an imbalance in the body’s electrolytes and may result from prolonged vomiting or diarrhea, or inadequate intake of fluids. If dehydration occurs, in intravenous drip of fluids may be given.

Diabetes Mellitus

A

In women of childbearing age, generally Type I Diabetes Mellitus would be the only form seen. This form of diabetes is seen by a deficiency or lack of insulin being produced by the pancreas. The person with diabetes mellitus type 1 is dependent on supplementary insulin to maintain a healthy blood sugar level.

Dilatation

A

Opening–used to describe the opening of the cervix, which is closed before labor begins to open and then dilates to 10cm diameter as labor progresses throughout the first stage, before the baby can descent into the vagina to be born. Also called dilation

A

The channel in the fetal heart that joins the pulmonary artery directly to the aorta, enabling the fetus to receive maximum oxygen during pregnancy. This channel usually closes at, or shortly after, birth.

Dystocia

A

The slowing down or stopping of a process. In labor, it relates to the slowing of progress. This is more significant with an active management approach and indicates that the woman is not progressing at the expected rate according to the friedman’s curve. This is a less significant issue with an expectant approach
