What is the theory of mind concept?

A

Baron-Cohen et al. (1985) suggested autistic children often have an inability to pretend play, many show difficulties expressing their imagination. Pretend play allows children to better understand others minds. Autistic children often have poor verbal proficiency and struggle attribute false beliefs.

Frith used embedded figures test, autistic children were often found to have superior performance in solving them. Frith hypothesized this may be due to autistic children having a weak central coherence, instead rely on parts to form a whole, this might be why autistic children struggle to integrate doing more than one thing at a time, such as social functioning and communication
