5.6 Photosynthetic pigments Flashcards
(8 cards)
what is meant by an aborbtion spectra
how much light is absorbed at different wavelengths
what is an action spectrum
how much photosyntehsis there is when a plant is subjected to different wavelengths of light
what are photosynthetic pigments?
they are molcules in chloroplasts that absorb light energy (photons) of specific wavelenths to power pPhotosynthesis.
where are photosynthetic pigments found?
thylakoid membrane inside chloroplasts
why do plants have multiple pigments?
each pigment absorbs different wavelengths of light
this broadens the range of light energy the plant can use
what is the role of chlorophyll a
and what kind of light does it absorb
primary pigment (essential for photosynthesis)
blue/violet and red
what is a photosystem?
it is a protein-pigment complex embedded in the thylakoid membrane that captures energy and converts it into chemical energy by exciting electrons
what are the two photosystems in photosynthesis ?
- PSII (PS680)
- PSI (PS700)
