Lymphatic System Flashcards
Name five structures of the lymphatic structures of the lymphatic system ?
1) lymphatic vessels
2) red bone marrow
3) thymus
4) spleen
5) lymph nodes
What are the 3 main functions for the lymphatic system ?
1) drain tissue spaced o excess interstitial fluid
2) transports dietary fats and fat-soluble vitamins from the gastrointestinal tract through the blood
3) protects boy from cancer cells and micro organisms via immune response
What is interstitial fluid ?
Is the fluid found around tissue cells
What happens when there’s excessive interstitial fluid ?
The extra fluid around the tissues ( interstitial fluid ) enters the lymphatic capillaries
When this fluid starts to circulate through the lymphatic vessels it’s called a lymph .
Define a lymph ?
The intestinal fluid that circulate through the lymphatic vessels .
Name three things about lymphatic capillaries
1) highly permeable - capillaries are found b/w tissue cells
2) lymphatic capillaries are closed in one end
3) cells are overlapped and open door when pressure of interstitial fluid is high and once it enters , the end closes
What is the flow of lymph ? 5 travel points
Lymp flows
1st through the lymphatic capillaries
2nd then flows through the larger vessels
3rd then the lymphatic ducts
4th down to the right or left subclavian vein then finally
5) down the vena cava
How does lymph flow occur ?
Lymph flow occurs through the skeletal muscle during contractions and respiratory movement
What is the function of right lymphatic duct ?
Drains right arm
Chest
Torso
Lower limbs
What is the function of the thoracic duct ?
Drains left arm chest torso and Lower limbs
Where is the thymus located ? And its function ?
The thymus is located in the mediastinum and medial to the kings
Thymus’s function is to produce at T cells ( t lymphocytes )
Decribe 4 things about lymph modes and its function
Lymph nodes are :
- oval structure located along the lymphatic vessels
- scattered throughout the body
- rich in T - cells and B cells
Function : immunity , and filters and removes foreign substances
What is the spleen ?
Spleen is the largest lymphatic tissue in the body
Located between the stomach and diaphragm
What are the 2 functions of the spleen
1( blood reservoir
2) degradation of aged and damaged red blood cells and platelets
3) immunity - consists of macrophages which engulf bacteria and lymphocytes
