What is a Gravitational Field?
A field in which a force acts on a mass.
What are field lines?
they are lines that show the gravitational field and they always point towards the centre of mass of the object.
What are equipotential lines?
a point on this lines feels the same strength of the gravitational field.
What is Newton’s Gravitational law?
This law states that a particle attracts every other particle in the universe using a force that is directly proportional to the product of the masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them.
What is a masses gravitational potential?
this is the potential energy a unit mass would have at a specific point int he field.
What is a geostationary orbit?
- the satellite stays at a fixed point around the earth
- the satellite has the same period as the earth
- useful for tv satellites and communications
What is an electric field
an electric field is a region in which a charged particle feels a force
What is coulomb’s law?
It states like charges repel and opposite charges attract, with a force proportional to the product of the charges and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them
What happens if you throw an electron into a uniform field?
- the electron experiences a constant vertical force- eg projectile motion
- constant horizontal velocity
- constant vertical acceleration
what is a magnetic field?
this is a region in which a magnetic material or moving charge feels a force
What is magnetic flux?
this is a measure of the strength of a magnetic field over a given area perpendicular to it
What is magnetic flux density?
this is the magnetic flux per unit area
What is the strength of the magnetic field?
the force per unit ( current times length) perpendicular to the field.
