A volcano is an opening, or rupture, in a planets surface of crust, which allows hot magma, volcanic ash and gases to escape from below the surface

There a 3 different types of volcano. Geographers call the categories active, dormant and extinct

A

An active volcano is liable to erupt at any time e.g. Mt Etna

A

A dormant has not erupted for many years. E.g. Mt Pinatubo erupted in 1991 after 500 years of dormancy

A

An extinct volcano has not erupted for a very long time and is unlikely to erupt again e.g. Mt Kulal in Kenya

About 44% of icelands total energy comes from geothermal energy where boiling underground water, heated by the hot rocks deep below the surface, produces steam which can be used to generate electricity
