Old Testament Background - Light = good, darkness = bad
Isaiah 5:20
God is associated with dark only in 2 ways:
His thick glory cloud can blot out light (Ex 14:20)
He creates literal and metaphorical darkness (Isaiah 45:7)
God is associated with light in many more ways:
He dwells in light (Ps 104:1–2)
Light shines from his face (Psalm 44:3)
He is light for the righteous (Ps 27:1)
His word is a lamp and a light (Psalm 119:105)
Darkness is usually a sign of God’s judgement: Plague against Egypt:
Ex 10:21-23, Psalm 105:28
The covenant curse of military defeat for Israel manifests in darkness
Isaiah 5:30
The coming of the messiah is pictured as a great light.

The day of salvation will bring light to the blind

Prisoners will be released from darkness
