Mannitol’s mechanism of action

A

Promotes the movement of fluid from the intracellular space to the extracellular space. Decreases cerebral edema and intracranial pressure. Promotes urinary excretion of toxins.

Indications for Mannitol

A

Cerebral edema, reduce intracranial pressure (ICP) for certain cause (space-occupying lesions), rhabdomyolysis (myoglobinuria), blood transfusion reaction.

A

Hypotension, Pulmonary Edema, Severe dehydration, Congestive heart failure active intracranial bleeding

Adult Dose and admin of Mannitol via IVP

A

0.5 – 1 g/kg IV infusion over 5 – 10 minutes. Additional doses of 0.25 – 2 g/kg can be given every 4 – 6 hours PRN.

A

0.5 – 1 g/kg/dose IV/IO infusion over 30-60 minutes, may repeat in 30 minutes.
