Ch.18 Protists Flashcards
Protists
Unicellular or single celled eukaryotic organisms
Endosymbionts
Symbiotic organisms that live within another organism, which is called the host organism
How protists evolved
The first protist cell was formed by a symbiosis among several prokaryotes
What evidence suggests symbiosis played a part in protist evolution
A number of organelles in eukaryotic cells are similar in structure to prokaryotes
What is the significance of cyanophora paradoxa
Organelles can be extracted and grown outside of the cell
Why would a name be underlined
Because it has a scientific name
4 phylum in the kingdom protista
Ciliophora, zoomastigina, sporozoa, sarcodina
What are ciliates
Ciliates are protists that have cilia
Pellicle
Complex living outer layer of certain protists
Trichocysts
Flask-shaped structure in the pellicles of some protists used to defend or anchor the organism
Gullet
Indentation on one side of a paramecium that brings food from the outside to the interior of the cell
Food valcuole
Membrane enclosed cavity in protists in which food is digested
Anal pore
Structure in paramecia and certain other protists through which waste materials are emptied into the enviroment
Contractile vacuole
Structure in some protists that collects water and discharges it from the cell
Flagella
Long, whiplike projection that aids in movement in some cells
