Q

What do Marxist feminists believe about the family?

A

Women are being exploited and there oppression performs several functions for Capitalism

1) Women reproduce the labour force – through their unpaid domestic labour, by socialising the next generation of workers and servicing the current workers
2) Women absorb anger – The Marxist-Feminist interpretation of this is that women are just absorbing the anger of the proletariat ‘ Takers of shit’
3) Women are a ‘reserve army of cheap labour’ – if women’s primary role is domestic, and they are restricted from working, this also means they are in reserve, to be taken on temporarily as necessary by the Bourgeois,

Q

What do Liberal feminists believe?

A

Many feminists have failed to acknowledge progress for women such as the greater freedom into paid work

  • The increase in choice and rise of dual earner households has helped create greater equality in relationships
  • However in order to achieve full equality there needs to be flexibility in paid employment

Q

What are the two characteristics of postmodernism?

A
  1. Diversity and fragmentation- Society is increasingly fragmented, with a broad diversity of subcultures rather than one shared culture.
  2. Rapid social change - New technology have transformed our lives by dissolving barriers of time and space and as a result of these social changes, family life has become very diverse and there is no longer one dominant family type
