What are the different properties?
Physical
Chemical
Characteristic
Non-characteristic
What are properties?
Any characteristic of a substance.
What are physical properties? Give an example.
They describe the characteristics of a substance. An example is colour, shape, size, odour, mass, volume.
What are chemical properties? Give an example.
They identify a change that happens when two or more substances combine to form a new substance. An example is flammability, combustibility, reaction to anything.
What is a characteristic property? Give an example.
They identify a specific substance. An example is density, melting point, boiling point.
What is a non-characteristic property. Give an example.
It can help identify a specific substance but cannot identify it. An example is colour, texture, size, mass.
Name physical properties.
Density Taste Colour Odour Hardness Luster Electromotive Solubility Boiling point Melting point
Name chemical properties.
Reacts with anything Supports combustion Neutralizes with a base Neutralizes an acid Flammability Solubility
What is the difference between a characteristic property and a non-characteristic property?
Characteristic properties identify a substance, while a non-characteristic property may help but it will not identify it.
