Describe sedimentary rock formation and give examples

A

Sedimentary rocks - formed from layers of sediment at the bottom of lakes or the sea. Over millions of years the layers get buried under the weight pressing down on them, this squeezes the water out.

A

Formed by intense heat and pressure on sedimentary rocks over long periods of time.
Marble is formed from limestone or chalk.

Describe the formation of igneous rocks and give an example

A

Igneous rocks are formed when molten magma pushed up into the crust before cooling. Intrusive is formed inside the volcano and has large crystals, extrusive formed above the ground cools quickly and form small crystals.

Describe the uses of Limestone

A

Fine buildings are often made of limestone blocks.
It is used to make cement concrete and glass. It can neutralise acidic soil, it is used in power station chimneys to neutralise sulphur dioxide.

Describe problems with limestone.

A

Quarrying it makes huge holes. It creates a lot of dust and noise, it needs to be removed by Lorraine’s causing more pollution.
