Generating Electricity Flashcards
How do we generate Electricity from a non-renewable source?
Fossil Fuels are burnt to release energy
Boils water to produce steam
Steam turns turbine which are attached to electrical generators
A jet turbine heats air instead of water giving it a start up time
How does nuclear fuel generate electricity?
A reactor is used to generate heat by nuclear fission
Heat exchanger is used to transfer heat energy from the reactor to the water
Turns steam and drives turning
What are biofuels used for
Biofuels are burnt to release energy. Plants grow quickly, fuels which are burnt can be replaced
Plants and animal waste from farming can also be used as biofuel
What are the Non-Renewable energy sources?
Coal oil and gas are formed over a million years from plants and animals.
What’s nuclear fission?
Nuclear fission is the splitting of a nucleus releasing neutrons that collide with each other
Wind turbine advantages
No pollutant gas
Can be offsure
Disadvantages of wind turbine
Expensive
Tidal waves advantages
No fuel required
Tidal wave disadvantages
High building cost
Hydroelectric advantages
Fresh start up time
Hydroelectric disadvantages
Destroys habitat
Solar advantages
No pollutant gases are produced
Solar disadvantages
Non rechargeable batteries
Advantages of renewable sources
No fuels cost
No chemical pollution
Disadvantages of renewable sources
Expensive
Takes space
