Routing Information Protocol

A

(RIP) Distance-vector protocol using hop count as a metric. maximum hops allowed is 15. Therefore 16 hops is infinite.
Used as an IGP

Open Shortest Path First

A

(OPSPF) Link-state protocol using cost as a metric, which is based off the speeds of the links between hops. Popular IGP because of ease of scalibility and fast convergence.

Intermediate System -to- Intermediate System

A

(IS-IS) Link state protocol like OSPF but uses a configurable metric and Dijkstra’s logrithim for shortest path. Many of the same IGP benefits of OSPF but hasn’t been deployed as much.

Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol

A

(EIGRP) Cisco proprietary IGP. Great in Cisco only environments, not so much in mixed. Offers many of the benefits of OSPF. Hard to classify as link-state vs distance-vector.

Border Gateway Protocol

A

(BGP) The only EGP that is really used, pretty much how the internet runs. Path-vector as it counts the hops between autonymous systems. Does not actually take link speeds into account. Is incredibly scalable but does not quickly converge in case of an outage.
