A

Occurs when food or stool cannot move through intestines
In small intestines or in colon, partial or complete blocks
Most common: adhesions, hernias, cancers, certain medicines

Accumulation of intestinal contents proximal to obstruction
Reduced fluid absorption and intestinal secretions
Increased capillary permeability
Third spacing

Clinical Manifestations

A

Colon: abdominal distention, new onset constipation and lack of flatus
SBO: colicky abdominal pain, N/V, abdominal distention
Later signs: decreased flatus and constipation

A

NGT to suction: decompress stomach
IV fluid therapy
Corticosteroids- antiemetic and anti-inflammatory
Corrective surgery: partial/total colectomy w/ colostomy or ileostomy
