What is the medical model of treatment?

A

Assumption that the abnormal behaviour is the result of physical problem therefore focus is on the physical condition = tolerance, physical withdrawal, symptoms, vit def. e.g. Detox, substitute prescribing

A

Describes an addiction as a disease with biological, neurological, genetic and environmental sources of origin = abstinence is the only viable treatment. E.g. AA 12 step programme

A

States addiction doesn’t exist, excessive use is merely a mid-learnt coping-mechanism = alternative coping mechanisms can be taught; past experiences addressed. E.g. CBT

A

physical condition caused by chronic use of atoleranceforming drug, in which abrupt or gradualdrug withdrawalcauses unpleasant physical symptoms (e.g., fatigue anddelirium tremens)

Define the mechanism of psychological dependance

A

mediated through-ve reinforcement, involves a desire to use a drug or perform a behaviour to avoid the unpleasant withdrawal syndrome that results from cessation of exposure to it. (e.g dysphoria andanhedonia)
