Q

describe acoustic telemetry?

A

also uses implnated tags, but these send an acoustic signals which are picked up by acoustic hydrophone (receivers) as they pass by. They are more passive than radio telemetry but can also track actively. However more expensive than radio telemetry.

Q

what are radio telemetry and what are the pros and cons?

A

radio tags surgically implanted in fish. The tags actively send out a signal that can be read by an antenna and receiver. Pro is that it is actively tracking the individual con is it is expensive and batteries have limited lifetime

Q

what is the 3 R priniciple?

A

Replacement- can something other than animals be used? Reduction- can fewer animals be used? Refinement- how can we minimize pain and maximize welfare?

Q

how do researchers go about submitting an experiment to a board?

A

a research submits a form that must be signed by many individuals, which is then submitted to an animal care board who reviews it and either accepts or denies it and asks for revisions.

Q

describe pop-up satellite archibal tags (PSATs)

A

external tags that collect various information about the fishs surroundings. saltwater will degrade the connection to the fish and it floats up to the surface after a set amount of time and send its data to the research. No retrieval needed. This cannot be used in freshwater.
