Lens, Vitreous, And Retina Flashcards

1
Q

Plateau iris

A
  • aqueous humor obstruction
  • iris is flexible so fluid pushes up underneath it causing to to block off the flow of aqueous
  • complete angle closure

Q

Retinal tear (horseshoe tear)

A

Vitreous gets pulled and the retina comes with it instead of detaching
-younger people have stronger attachments so they will have larger tears if they happen

Q

WHAT IS A SEROUS DETACHMENT

A

Retinal tears away and fluid/vitreous gets in the new (interneural-like) space

  • fluid will make the detachment likely to spread
  • patient has to walk around very carefully till they have surgery the next morning

Q

Preretinal hemorrhage

A

Between the vitreous and the retina

  • blood fills underneath
  • usually doesn’t get in macula because the attachment there is strong and did not come undone
  • will not flow to other areas of the retina because the attachments are strong

Q

Epiretinal membrane (macular pucker)

A

After aging, the vitreous shrinks and liquifies inside the hyaloid membrane

  • pulls away from the retina but does not snap free from it
  • wrinkles cause bluriness
  • can progress to macular hole

Q

Horizontal raphe

A

Central retina develops first and then the periphery grows and has to course around the central stuff already in place

Q

Myelinated nerve fibers

A

Nerves in eye will not have myelination because its too bulky. Some people born with it in their eye though.
-you can tell its not vasculitis because it does not follow one vessel, it will completely block out the view of the blood vessel and looks white and fluffy

Q

How does a coloboma form

A

There is a fissure where embryonic blood vessels course, they eventually disintegrate and the fissure is supposed to close. Sometimes it fails to close and you get a coloboma
