Uses Of Radiation Flashcards

1
Q

How do smoke detectors work?

A

A weak source of alpha radiation is placed in the detector, close to two electrodes.
The source causes ionisation and a current flows
If there is a fire, the smoke will absorb the radiation, stopping the current and the alarm sounds

Q

How do we trace medicines?

A

Certain radioactive isotopes can be injected, and an external detector can follow the medicine going round the body.
