What are the two tissues plants use to transport substances?
Xylem and Phloem tissue.
What do xylem vessels transport?
Water - from the roots to the stem and leaves.
What are xylem tubes made from?
Dead xylem cells with cell walls that break down at opposite ends to form tubes.
What is the transpiration stream?
The movement of water from the roots through the xylem and out of the leaves.
What do phloem tissues transport?
Dissolved sugars from the leaves to the rest of the plant, including the growing regions and the storage organs.
What are phloem tissues made of?
Living phloem cells which do not have fully broken down cell walls but have small holes to form a tube.
What is transpiration?
Water on the surface of spongy and palisade cells evaporates and then diffuses out of the leaf.
How does water reach the xylem tissue from the roots?
The water passes from root cell to root cell by osmosis.
How does light intensity effect transpiration?
Transpiration increases in bright light.
How does temperature effect transpiration?
Transpiration is faster in higher temperatures.
How does wind speed effect transpiration?
Transpiration is faster in windy conditions.
How does humidity effect transpiration?
Transpiration is slower in humid conditions.
