A

Airport was badly damaged and roads were blocked by trees and debris

Leyte and tacloban has a 5 metre storm surge and 400mm of heavy rainfall flooded 1km inland

90% of tacloban was destroyed

Three quarters of farmers and fishers lost their income - recovery costs were $724 million

6,190 people died

14.1 million people effected

$12 billion overall damage

What were the secondary effects

A

An oil barge ran aground which caused a 800,000 litre oil leak- most washed ashore contaminating trees and fishing water

By 2014, rice prices had risen by 11.9%

Flooding contaminated surface and groundwater with seawater - likelihood of infections and diseases spreading were increased

A

President televised a warning, authorities evacuated 800,000 people

Government insured essential equipment and medical supplies were sent out

Emergency aid supplies arrived 3 days later by plane, a curfew imposed two days after Haiyan to reduce looting

33 countries and international organisations pledged to help - more than $1.5 billion was pledged in foreign aid
