Q

Key traits of Bacteria

A
Single cell
Microscopic
Lack chlorophyll
Reproduce by division
Some are aerobic (require air), some anaerobic

Most common-Related to many problems in water systems

All grow in 68-104 degrees F, some as broad as 50-158. Require pH of 4 to 8, ideal 7.4.

Create odor, slime (byproduct of metabolic process), create acid which corrodes process equipment, impede flow

Q

Key traits of Algae

A

Simple plants without roots, stems or leaves
Require water and sunlight (for photosynthesis to create food)

One cell is invisible but link together to form strands.

Grow best in pH of 5.5 to 9, 86-95 degrees

Common in open air systems

Impede heat transfer, clog pipes, form large masses where additional MB will grow

Q

Key traits of Fungi

A

Saprophytes or parasites

Plant like, but no leaves, stem or roots but require water and oxygen (found only above water)

Reproduce by spores

Found in systems using wood

Two groups, filamentis fungi (mold) and yeast

Both groups like pH 2-8 (5.6 ideal) and temp of 32-100

Degrade wood (paper) quality
