Q

What does the cache do?

A

Stores instructions that we use frequently in the CPU. The larger it gets the slower it becomes

Q

What is RAM and what are its properties?

A

Random access memory - stores instructions for programs you’re running, clears when the PC is shut down, volatile, cant permanently store information

Q

What is ROM and what are its properties?

A

Read only memory - permanent storage you can only read from, non-volatile, cant write over, when the computer is turned on instructions from the ROM are processed

Q

What does a hard drive do?

A

Permanent storage device - tries to write the data in the same place but often ends up scattered

Q

What does virtual memory do?

A

Creates a section on the hard drive when there is no more physical storage (slower than RAM)

Q

What is disk thrashing?

A

When the memory is full and files are moved around to be able to use the PC, its a delay of moving data that happens when the memory is full

16
Q

What is secondary storage and why do we need it?

A

Hard drive, we need it to permanently save data

17
Q

What is optical storage?

A

CD, DVD, blu-ray

18
Q

What is magnetic storage?

A

Tape, not as portable, cheap, not a durable

19
Q

What is flash storage?

A

Stored in silicone, more expensive, smaller
