What are the trade names of albuterol?
Proventil, Ventolin
What kind of adrenergic agonist is it?
A selective beta 2 adrenergic agonist
What does it the response?
Relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle and bronchodilation.
To who is it recommended for?
Patients with asthma. Albuterol is preferred by patient’s with asthma because it is more selective than isoproterenol (which activates beta 1 and beta 2 receptors)
What happens when high doses are given?
May affect beta 1 receptors, causing an increase in heart rate.
Where is it absorbed?
GI tract
Where is it metabolized?
Extensively by the liver
What is the primary use of albuterol?
Prevent and treat bronchospasm
What inhibits albuterol’s actions?
Beta blockers may inhibit action of albuterol
If albuterol was take with MAOI, what happens?
A hypertensive crisis results
What are the therapeutic effects and uses of albuterol?
Treat bronchospasm, asthma, bronchitis, and other COPD.
Activation of beta 2 adrenergic receptors of lungs, thus producing dilation of bronchioles
When is the onset if taken orally?
In 30 mins
When is the peak if taken orally?
In 2 to 3 hours
How long is the duration if taken orally?
4 to 6 hours
When is the onset if inhaled?
5 to 15 minutes
