Week One Flashcards
What is the nervous system divided into?
Central nervous system: brain & spinal cord
Peripheral nervous system: cranial and spinal nerves
What are the CNS and PSNS composed of?
Neurons and supporting cells
Where are neurons present?
In the nerves
What do neurons do?
Produce and transmit the nerve impulse
What is a nerve made of?
Composed of several bundles of axons (nerve fibres) held together by connective tissue
What do most nerves contain?
Sensory and motor fibres
What is the composition of nerve fibre?
Epineurium
Perineurium
Endoneurium
What is the epineurium?
Outermost protective layer
Dense connective tissue
Rich in collagen
What is the perineurium?
Surrounds each individual fascicle
Isolates bundle of axons from surrounding connective tissue
Encloses fluid filled space between perineurium and underlying nerve axons
What is the endoneurium?
Includes seams of loose connective tissue to provide pathways for small arterioles, venules, axons
What are the three principle regions of a neuron?
Cell body
Dendrite
Axon
What is the purpose of cell body of a neuron?
Nutritional centre
Large molecule production
What is the purpose of a dendrite?
Receptive area for impulse transmission
What is the purpose of an axon?
Surrounded by Schwann cells
Conduct impulses away from the cell body
What is the axoplasm?
The axon’s cytoplasm
