Used to create realism and immediacy which adds to the atmosphere of the poem. This is created in the first few lines - ‘Three o’clock. The bus lurches round into the sun.’

The man doesn’t want to be judged or condemn his drinking, he just wants to be understood.
'lurches' 'flops' 'violently' 'lunges' 'swings'
These five verbs bring the poem to life and help to add to the realism and atmosphere of the poem.
Use of Scots Dialect

These all add to the setting of the poem as the poem is set in Glasgow and these are Glaswegian dialect.

legs’
This helps to show the steps of the bus as the drunk man disappears into the sunset. This also mimics the mans unsteady movements and the jerky movements of the bus.

The mood in the end is bittersweet as this was a chance encounter that has had a lasting impression on the poets life.
