What are the five lives?
1- Day of “Alast” (when we were souls and God asked “Am I not your Lord?? And we replied: “Yes we bear witness.” 2- Womb 3- Earth 4- Grave 5- Heaven (in sha Allah)
What are three definitions of “taqwa”?
Awareness of Allah. Shield. Obeying Allah’s commandments and avoiding the prohibited, inwardly and outwardly.
What are the three criteria of forgiveness? What if the sin is backbiting, what do we add?
1- Stop the sin 2- Remorse in heart 3- Strategize in heart and action to not repeat If backbiting we add: make dua for, and speak nice about the person we backbit.
What are the three dimensions of Islam in Arabic? What do they mean? Where are they located in the human? What is the name of the science related to each dimension? What happens if we neglect each of the dimensions?
- Islam. Goodness. Actions of the Body. Fiqh (Islamic Law). If we neglect, we can’t prove our submission to God, and we submit to our ego instead of to Allah. 2. Iman. Truth. Beliefs of the Mind. Aqidah (theology). If we neglect, it becomes a culture instead of a religion. 3. Ihsan. Beauty. Character of the Heart/Soul. Tazkiya/Tasawwuf (virtue). If we neglect, religion becomes dry, rigid, and just a bunch of rules.
What is “misguided religiosity”?
An imbalanced understanding and practice of the 3 dimensions of Islam.
HADITH: What is one of Satan’s go-to strategy?
التسويف شعار الشيطان “Later” is the slogan of Satan.
QURAN: Write a verse in the Qur’an describing the purpose of life.
I have not created jinn and man except to worship me. وما خلقت الجن والانس الا ليعبدون
What are the differences between “Simple Ignorance” & “Compound Ignorance”?
Simple Ignorance: One doesn’t know. Easy to cure. Compound Ignorance: One doesn’t know, but thinks they know and offer evidence to prove it. Difficult to cure.
What are the correct and incorrect responses when we do something good or bad?
When we do something good, we give credit to God. The incorrect response is to give credit to one self and become arrogant. When we do something bad, we blame ourselves. The incorrect response is to blame God or others. Nawawi #24 (final phrase) فَمَنْ وَجَدَ خَيْرًا فَلْيَحْمَدْ اللَّهَ، وَمَنْ وَجَدَ غَيْرَ ذَلِكَ فَلَا يَلُومَن إلَّا نَفْسَهُ “So he who finds good let him praise Allah, and he who finds other than that let him blame no one but himself.”
What are the conditions of giving advice?
1- Giving advice does not create a greater harm. 2- Private 3- Wise & Gentle 4- The act we are advising against is not permitted by a qualified opinion.
Describe the Lower Calling? Describe the Higher Calling?
Higher vs Lower: Worship God instead vs worshipping self. Obey shariah vs obey desires. Follow Prophet (S) vs following feelings. Pursue paradise vs pursue pleasure.
How is the idea of “freedom” misunderstood? What is true freedom vs false freedom?
Do I control my desires, or, do my desires control me.
How many types of bid’ah exist? Provide examples.
Bid’ah Sayyi’ah. Changing Dhuhr to 1 rakah. Bid’ah Hasanah. Adding dots and vowels to the written Qur’an. The rules of tajweed. Islamic calendar.
Write a verse from the Qur’an in Arabic defining the purpose of life.
وَمَا خَلَقْتُ الْجِنَّ وَالْإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِ I have not created Jinn or Man except to worship me.
Write a hadith in Arabic & English about actions being based on intentions.
Nawawi #1: إنَّمَا الْأَعْمَالُ بِالنِّيَّاتِ، وَإِنَّمَا لِكُلِّ امْرِئٍ مَا نَوَى، فَمَنْ كَانَتْ هِجْرَتُهُ إلَى اللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ فَهِجْرَتُهُ إلَى اللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ، وَمَنْ كَانَتْ هِجْرَتُهُ لِدُنْيَا يُصِيبُهَا أَوْ امْرَأَةٍ يَنْكِحُهَا فَهِجْرَتُهُ إلَى مَا هَاجَرَ إلَيْهِ Actions are according to intentions, and everyone will get what they intended. Whoever migrates with an intention for Allah and His messenger, the migration will be for the sake of Allah and his Messenger. And whoever migrates for worldly gain or to marry a woman, then his migration will be for the sake of whatever he migrated for.
Islam is built with five pillars – write a hadith in Arabic to describe this.
Nawawi #2: بُنِيَ الْإِسْلَامُ عَلَى خَمْسٍ: شَهَادَةِ أَنْ لَا إلَهَ إلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ، وَإِقَامِ الصَّلَاةِ، وَإِيتَاءِ الزَّكَاةِ، وَحَجِّ الْبَيْتِ، وَصَوْمِ رَمَضَانَ Islam is built with five: Islam has been built on five [pillars]: testifying that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, performing the prayers, paying the Zakah, making the pilgrimage to the House, and fasting in Ramadan.
Translate this hadith from English to Arabic: “Religion is sincerity.”
Nawawi #7: الدِّينُ النَّصِيحَةُ
Write 2 hadiths in Arabic about avoiding the doubtful.
Nawawi #6 & #11 وَمَنْ وَقَعَ فِي الشُّبُهَاتِ وَقَعَ فِي الْحَرَامِ Whoever falls into the doubtful, falls into the forbidden (haram). دَعْ مَا يُرِيبُك إلَى مَا لَا يُرِيبُك Leave what makes you doubt for that which does not make you doubt.
Write a hadith in Arabic about bid’ah: adding to the religion.
Nawawi #5: “مَنْ أَحْدَثَ فِي أَمْرِنَا هَذَا مَا لَيْسَ مِنْهُ فَهُوَ رَدٌّ Whoever adds something to this religion of ours, that is not from it, shall have it rejected.

Nawawi #2: أَنْ تَعْبُدَ اللَّهَ كَأَنَّك تَرَاهُ، فَإِنْ لَمْ تَكُنْ تَرَاهُ فَإِنَّهُ يَرَاك To worship Allah as if you see Him; and if you don’t see Him know that He sees you.
A man came to the Prophet (upon him blessings and peace) and asked for advice. Our Prophet (upon him blessings and peace) repeated the same advice a few times. What was the advice?
Nawawi #16: لَا تَغْضَبْ، فَرَدَّدَ مِرَارًا، قَالَ: لَا تَغْضَبْ Do not get angry.

Nawawi #15: “مَنْ كَانَ يُؤْمِنُ بِاَللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ فَلْيَقُلْ خَيْرًا أَوْ لِيَصْمُتْ، وَمَنْ كَانَ يُؤْمِنُ بِاَللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ فَلْيُكْرِمْ جَارَهُ، وَمَنْ كَانَ يُؤْمِنُ بِاَللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ فَلْيُكْرِمْ ضَيْفَهُ Let him who believes in Allah and the Last Day speak good or keep silent; and let him who believes in Allah and the Last Day be generous to his neighbor; and let him who believes in Allah and the Last Day be generous to his guest.

Nawawi #12: مِنْ حُسْنِ إسْلَامِ الْمَرْءِ تَرْكُهُ مَا لَا يَعْنِيهِ Beautiful Islam entails minding one’s own business.
