A
Challenge negative and irrational thoughts, changing behaviour to be more effective

A
- Challenging negative thoughts and having the patient take an active role in their treatment
- Writing a diary and keeping track of emotions and events (client as scientist)

A
- REBT rational emotive behaviour therapy
- Extends ABC to ABCDE, D for dispute and E for effect

Empirical argument - is there evidence to support the belief ?

A
Decrease in avoidance and isolation, increasing engagement which is shown to improve mood

- March et al compared CBT/antidepressants and both
- After 36weeks 81% of CBT/antidepressants, 86% or both had significantly improved
- Shows relevance of CBT

EV - Not suitable for diverse patients
A
- Requires high intensity engagement, however in severe case people lack the inability to do so
- as well as people with learning disabilities
- only available and helpful for a specific range of patients

- Ali et al, assessed people 12 moths following CBT
- 42% had relapse within 6 months, and 53% within a year
- may require quite frequent repetition to remain effective
