what were the three forces of the civil war
greens, reds and whites
what was the nature of the the greens?
-were generally situated in the rural regions of russia
-poland,lithuania, latvia, estonia gained independence
-gave the reds more fronts to fight on
what were the strengths and weaknesses of the green party?
strengths-large resistance and made it difficult for the bolsheviks to respond to loads of separate fronts
weaknesses- they were split up and therefore ununified
what was the nature of the white group?
-conservative/well trained in military affairs
-they were divided geographically
-ran by denikin (caucasus region), kolchak (czech), yudenich (estonia)
what were the whites strengths?
strenghts: well trained in military affairs
weaknesses: backwards and they didn’t really have a plan and were reliant on foreign aid
what was the nature of the reds?
-they had clear political objectives and learned good military strategy
-they wanted to wipe out all opponents
what were the strengths and weaknesses of the reds
strength:very objective with their plan and trotsky had a train that stretched 70,000 miles that rallied troops and transported goods as well they were already in authority
-weaknesses: there was lots of wars to fight
why did the civil war break out?
-economic difficulties like the 50g limit of bread per day in petrograd
-humiliation due to brest litovsk
-people’s upset at the political state of things from conservative people
how were the french involved in the civil war?
-revenge from the bolsheviks removing the eastern front and therefore making it harder for the french
-they sent in their own troops to fight for the white however eventually they gave up
-the french mainly worked in crimea and ukraine
how were britain involved the civil war?
-david lloyd george states that he’s anti german and willing to support anything that will keep the bolsheviks fighting
-after november 1918 the support became halfhearted
how was the usa involved in the civil war?
they were the fastest to withdraw their support and this was due to the fact that they felt that they couldn’t take on the full force of the germans
how was japan involved in the civil war?
they were part of allied efforts they focussed on the russian pacific coast for their own interests in the war and sent out 65000 allied with the 12000 americans
by 1921 what were the numbers of people in each of the army’s?
red- 5 million
white-100,000
trotskystes role in the civil war?
his train transported goods and soldiers and stretched roughly 70,000miles
what was the tambov uprising?
in 1920 there was a series of fierce resistance and this culminated with alexander antonov commanding an army of 20,000 men from summer of 1920to summer of 1921
what happened to antonov after the rebellion was squashed?
he avoided capture for one year but in june of 22 he was ratted out by a former supporter and was killed by a cheka unit
how did the kronstadt rising start?
two bolsheviks party members- shlyapnikov and kollentai led a workers opposition group against war communism and spoke about how the b party had lost touch with the proletariat
-by feb 1921 petrograd workers had crossed over to the kronstadt naval base and demanded a workers state
what happened during the kronstadt rising
after people had come to the naval base they demanded a workers state, then they wrote a manifesto to give their demands however lenin ordered 60,000 red troops across the water and they crushed the uprising
why is the kronstadt rising so significant
because, the naval base had previously supported the bolsheviks and lenin later wrote that this uprising was “undoubtedly more dangerous… then denikin yudenich and kolchak combined”
