Q

What was the 48/49 Berlin crisis and why did it happen?

A

Stalin increasingly worried that West Berlin would become a wealthy capitalist base within communist Eastern Europe.

So soviet troops cut off all links (road, rail, canal) between West Berlin and west Germany. Stalin hoped that the west would be forced to give up their sectors but Truman was determined to follow his policy of containment.

The west organised an airlift to fly in supplies to West Berlin until Stalin gave in and reopened all routes to West Berlin. Truman saw this as a success for his policy of containment. Stalin wouldn’t shoot down planes as risk of war

Q

What initially caused the Cuban missile crisis

A

1959, US backed Cuban dictator Batista was overthrown by a left wing rebel force led by Fidel Castro. He ejected all US businesses and investment, US retaliated by refusing to buy Cuba’s biggest exports- sugar, however, USSR offered to buy it instead.
Castro strengthened relations with the USSR, threat of a communist country 90 miles off the Florida coast worried JFK. He supported a landing of Cuban exiles at the bay of pigs in Cuba, intending to overthrow Castro- it was a disaster and great humiliation for the US president.
Soviet leader, Khrushchev, concerned about proximity of US missile bases in Italy and turkey and wanted to establish soviet bases in Cuba to balance things out- Castro agreed with the request.

Q

Reasons for US involvement in Vietnam

A

Unpopular southern leader Diem overthrown in nov 1963 and take over by communist north & leader Ho Chi Minh was feared.
Us policy of containment meant they supported Diem, and the domino theory suggested if south Vietnam became communist then neighbouring countries would too.
Gulf of Tonkin incident 1964- us destroyer “Maddox” fired on by a north Vietnamese patrol boat- president Johnson used this as an excuse to send troops to aid south vietnam

16
Q

What was operation rolling thunder

A

Intense bombing campaign of north Vietnam which lasted from 65 to 68 with the aim of destroying Vietcong supply routes.

Only encouraged even greater support for the war from north Vietnam and didn’t stop the supplies to the Vietcong from the south.

17
Q

What was chemical warfare

A

Weapons such as agent orange, a chemical defoliant used to destroy the jungle, and napalm, a type of burning jelly were used.

18
Q

What was ‘search and destroy’

A

Us used helicopters to drop troops near villages suspected of assisting the Vietcong- villages searched then set alight which made us forces unpopular as villages often innocent. South Vietnamese peasants now more likely to support the vietcong

19
Q

Reasons for US defeat(weaknesses of US)

A

Many US troops were young, inexperienced and unable to deal with guerrilla warfare- many unsure as to why they were fighting and so led to a fall in morale
Growing opposition at home- high death rates, tv coverage and atrocities e.g Mai Lai massacre turned many in the US against the war.
Failure of US tactics- failed to develop an effective response to guerrilla tactics, search&destroy and chemical warfare especially encouraged even greater peasant support for Vietcong.
Tet offensive (jan 1968)- Vietcong attacked cities & towns across south vietnam, showed that Vietcong could strike at heart of us territory, showed us public war was unsinkable and fuelled further criticism to us involvement.

20
Q

Reasons for US defeat in vietnam(strengths of communists)

A

Effective guerrilla tactics- fought a low tech war which mostly avoided pitched battles and reduced effectiveness of high tech US weapons. Methods were suited to the jungle terrain and included use of tunnels.
Support from china & USSR- supplied weapons as supported reunification of vietnam under communist north.
Support of south Vietnamese- many believed in communism and were alienated by US tactics+brutality- support made guerrilla tactics far more effective.
Fighting for a cause- Vietcong wanted to spread communism & unite Vietnam and never surrendered.

21
Q

What was the turning point in the Vietnam war

A

Nixons visit to china in 1972, peace treaty was signed in 1973 where a ceasefire was declared.
Communist forces had overrun south Vietnamese by 1975 and in 1976 vietnam was reunited under leadership of Ho Chi Minh.
Loss and Cambodia soon fell to communism too, domino theory was true.
