6 Effects Of Technological Developments Flashcards
(5 cards)
How has mass production effected society?
Has been turned into “a consumer society” where a large percentage of the population are more inclined to owning an ever-expanding range of goods and services.
How did the Consumer society start out?
Through the industrial revolution (in the late 18th century-early 19th century) and the the steam engine invention by James Watts in 1760s brought changes to manufacturing
How was the mass production initially beneficial?
Prior to the industrialisation, designer/maker craft products were only able to be bought by well-off people.
Machinery and industrialisation allowed
-affordable products on a large scale
-towns/transport infrastructure developed
What was the effect of mass production on employment? Think past
High skilled workers lost employment due to the rise of machinery which could do the job at a a quicker pace.
These workers were replaced with newly mechanised industries and low skilled workers
What was the effect of mass production on employment? Think more present
Development of technology such as polymer mouldings led to demise in traditional craft of products such as wooden toys
Computer based design+ highly automated manufacture
Requires a staff of low number of skilled technicians and many low skilled npc operatives to carry out mundane tasks
Lean manufacturing. Eg. Kaizen is also used to involve and motive workers which can improve quality of manufacturing.
