Where is the River Tees?
A
North East of England, Middlesbrough most notably.

Why is there a need for flood defences in the area?
A
Receives high annual precipitation of 2000mm
It’s an area of impermeable rock
Steep slopes
All this causes the River Tees to be a Flashy river

What hard engineering methods are in place?
A
The Cow Green Reservoir in the upper course is used to trap heavy rainfall
In the lower course the Yarm’s flood defence scheme implements high concrete walls and flood gates, gabions (to protect river sides from erosion)
At the mouth, river straightening and dredging takes place and the Tees Barrage was constructed in 1995 costing £54million
