A

The place where something happens or is set, or has particular events associated with it.

We behave in a particular way in these places, according to the social rules we understand. Eg a school bus / chat room.

A

The subjective (personal) and emotional attachment to a place.

People develop a sense of place through experience and knowledge of a particular area. Eg a mother’s arms or ‘home’.

A

The idea that the world is a set of places and each place is distinct and can be studied.

A

Sees place as a product of a particular set of social processes occurring at a particular time.

Eg Trafalger square was built to commemorate British Naval Victory in the 1800s can be understood as a place of empire and colloquialism.

A

How an individual experiences place.

For example, the degree of attachment, involvement and concern that a person or group has for a place is critical in understanding place.

What is the importance of place?

A
  • promotion of place is crucial in marketing holiday destinations
  • food items eg strawberries are marketed in terms of the place where the food is from
  • popularity of place may be linked to the reputation of the place they happen. Eg Glastonbury
  • people define themselves through a sense of place and by living in places and carrying out a range of everyday activities there. A person- place relationship is developed
