Animal and Plant cells Flashcards
What are the different parts of a cell called?
Sub-cellular structures
What do animal cells contain?
Nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, mitochondria and ribsomes
What do plant cells contain but animal cells don’t?
Cell wall, vacuole and chloroplasts
What is the nucleus?
The nucleus contains the genetic material which controls the activities of the cell. The genetic material is arranged into chromosomes
What is the cytoplasm?
The cytoplasm is a gel-like substance where most of the chemical reactions happen. It contains enzymes that control these chemical reactions
What is the cell membrane?
The cell membrane holds the cell together and controls what goes in and out
What are the mitochondria?
The mitochondria are where most of the reactions for respiration take place. Respiration transfers energy that the cell needs to work
What is the cell wall?
The cell wall is made from cellulose and supports the cell and strengthens it
What is the vacuole?
The vacuole contains cell sap - a solution of sugar and salts. It maintains the internal pressure to support the cell
What are the chloroplasts?
The chloroplasts are where photosynthesis occurs, which makes food for the plants. They contain a green substance called chlorophyll
