6.1 Flashcards
(15 cards)
What is a ferrous metal?
Alloys where iron is the main element.
What is the chemical symbol for Iron?
Fe (atomic number 26)
What are the characteristics of iron?
Ductile, soft and soft easily formed. Lack strength. Usually is a silvery-white and relatively heavy.
What happens when iron reacts with oxygen?
Forms iron oxide (rust)
What is pig iron?
Iron ore which has been mixed with carbon (3.8-4.7%)
How is steel made?
Re-melting pig iron and introducing oxygen.
What is torsional strength?
Ability to resist twisting forces
Flexural strength?
Resistance to bending
Fatigue strength?
Resistance to failure under repeated loading.
Impact strength?
Ability to resist shocked or sudden forces
Hardness?
Ability to resist cutting, penetration or abrasion.
Fusibility?
Ability to be melted and joined
Common alloying elements?
Carbon/ sulphur/silicon/phosphorus/nickel/molybdenum/tungsten.
What is austenitic?
Grade of steel/ (200 and 300 series)/ contains chromium and nickel/ non magnetic when annealed.
What is the ferritic
Mainly chromium with low carbon content/ magnetic/ good ductility and weld ability.
