define photosynthesis
process by which green plants manufacture carbohydrates from carbon dioxide and water
using energy from light captured by chlorophyll
photosynthesis chemical equation
6CO2 + 6H2O ——> C6H12O6 + 6O2
carbon dioxide + water —-> glucose + oxygen
heterotrophs
do not make their own foods - feed on organic substances
e.g animal and fungi
autotrophs
make their own foods- feed on inorganic substance
e.g green plants
importance of nitrate ions - making of amino acids
- nitrate ions produce nitrogen which is essential for making amino acids
- amino acids are building blocks of protein
- protein is needed for growth repair and making enzymes
- without enough nitrates, plants cant produce proteins
- leading to stunted growth and yellow leaves
importance of magnesium ions contain nitrogen- making of chlorophyll
- Magnesium ions are needed to make chlorophyll, the green pigment in leaves.
- Chlorophyll is essential for photosynthesis, which allows plants to make food.
- Without enough magnesium, plants cannot make enough chlorophyll, causing leaves to turn yellow and reducing the plant’s ability to photosynthesis
