6.1 History Of Chemistry Flashcards
(12 cards)
First substances discovered
Metals
Alchemy
Reflection of the serious religious beliefs of the Middle Ages
-focused on manipulating matter aiming to transmute metals like lead to gold
-study of natural world in an attempt to blend the natural world with spiritual world.
What did ancient Greeks believe in 500 BCE
All matter was made of four elements:
Earth
Fire
Water
Air
Democritus
Theory of atoms
Henning Brandt
Phosphorus-1669
Robert Boyle
1627-1691 elements
-tested substances to see if they could be broken down into simpler substances
-if they could be broken down it was a compound and if they couldn’t be broken down the substance was a new element
Scientific Revolution
“Reformed chemistry movement”
Henry Cavendish
Scientific Revolution-1766
-Hydrogen
Joesph Priestly
Scientific revolution 1774
-Oxygen
Antoine Lavoisier
Scientific Revolution 1743-1794
-first to recognize oxygen as an element
Daltons Atomic Theory
- All matter is made up of atoms, which are particles too small to see
- Each element has own kind of atom. Atoms of the same element have same mass and properties whereas, atoms of different element have different masses and properties
- Compounds are created when atoms of different elements combine together in specific ratios, usually whole numbers
