Once when I was six years old I saw a magnificent picture in a book, called True Stories from Nature, about the primeval forest.
Uma vez quando eu tinha seis anos de idade eu vi uma imagem magnífica em um livro, chamado Histórias Verdadeiras da Natureza, sobre a floresta primordial.
It was a picture of a boa constrictor in the act of swallowing an animal. Here is a copy of the drawing.
Era a imagem de uma jibóia no ato de engolir um animal. Aqui está uma cópia do desenho.
In the book it said: “Boa constrictors swallow their prey hole, without chewing it.
No livro dizia: Jibóias engolem sua presa inteira sem mastigá-la.
After that they are not able to move, and they sleep trough the six months that they need for digestion.”
Depois disso elas não são capazes de se mover e dormem por até seis meses, que precisam para a digestão.”
I pondered deeply, then, over the adventures of the jungle. And after some work with a colored pencil I succeeded in making my first drawing.
Eu ponderei profundamente, então, sobre as aventuras da selva.
E depois de algum trabalho, com um lápis colorido eu consegui fazer meu primeiro desenho.
My drawing number one, it looked like this. I showed my masterpiece to the grown-ups, and asked them whether the drawing frightened them.
Meu desenho número um pareceu assim.
Eu mostrei minha obra prima aos adultos e perguntei á eles se o desenho os amedrontava.
But they answered: “Frighten? Why should any one be frightened by a hat?”
Mas eles responderam: “Amedrontar? Porque alguém deveria estar amedrontado por uma chapéu?”
My drawing was not a picture of a hat. It was a picture of a boa constrictor digesting an elephant.
Meu desenho não era a imagem de um chapéu. Era a imagem de uma jibóia digerindo um elefante.
But since the grown-ups were not able to understand it, I made another drawing:

I drew the inside of a boa constrictor, so that the grown-ups could see it clearly. They always need to have things explained.
Eu desenhei o interior de uma jibóia para que os adultos pusessem vê-lo claramente. Eles sempre precisam ter coisas explicadas.
