Pathophys of Meckel’s diverticulum?

A
  • Failure of the omphalomesenteric duct (vitello-intestinal duct) to obliterate
  • Leading to heterotopic gastric tissue (pancreatic tissue and gastric tissue)
  • It is a true diverticulum, including all layers of the small intestine.

What is the Rule of 2’s re: Meckel’s?

A
  • Most common in children < 2 years of age
  • 2 times more common in males
  • 2 types of tissue - mostly (pancreatic and gastric)
  • 2 inches long
  • Found within 2 feet of the ileocaecal valve
  • Occurs in 2% of the population

A

• Asymptomaticmostly

  • Rectal bleeding (usually painless)
    • Melaena/haematochezia
    • Most common
    • Self-limiting, bright red
