Four Frames of color-blind racism
- abstract liberalism, 2. naturalization, 3. cultural racism, 4. minimization of racism.
Liberalism/Liberalism humanism
The core of modernity, philosophical, economic, cultural and political challenge to the feudal order.
- Features: individualism, universalism, egalitarianism, and meliorism.
- a political philosophy or worldview founded on ideas of liberty and equality.
Abstract Libralism
using ideas associated with political liberalism. “equal opportunity,” the idea that force should not be used to achieve social policy) and economic liberalism (“choice, individualism) in an abstract manner to explain racial matters.
Naturalization
Frame that allows whites to explain away racial phenomena by suggesting they are natural occurrences. Ex: segregation, all colors migrate to theirs.
Cultural Racism
Frame that relies on culturally based arguments. Ex: Mexicans don’t consider education. Blacks have too many babies.
Minimization of racism
Frame that suggests discrimination is no longer a central factor affecting minorities’ life chances (its better now than it was)
Laissez-fare racism/Competitive racism
Modern racism is essentially a combination of “American Creed” with anti-black resentment.
