Topic 1A: Water and Transport Flashcards
What are the two functions of water in the body?
- It’s a solvent allowing substances to dissolve in it
2. Transports substances
What name is used to describe the structure of water?
Dipole structure
Explain how the structure of water enable it to transport substances (3)
- Water has a dipolar structure
- Therefore it has a positive and negative side
- Makes it a good solvent fr ionic substances allowing them to be transported
- Water is is also cohesive helping it to flow and transport substances.
Explain how materials are transported in single celled organisms (2)
- Materials diffuse directly into cell accros cell membrane
2. This is effective because there is a short diffusion pathway (Diffusion rate is quick)
Would diffusion be a good way to transport materials in complex multicelluar organism? (2)
- No, because this would be too slow
2. Because substances will have to travel over large distances
How do multicellular organisms transport substances around the body?
Mass transport system
What is a Mass transport system?
A system used in multicelluar organisnms to carry raw material from specialised exchange organs to the body cells and to remove metabolic waste
