The Rise and Fall of the Chaos Report Figures Flashcards
What are the main criticisms of the original Chaos report?
The original data from which the conclusions were drawn was not published with the report.
Incompleteness - The classifications of the project were incomplete
Lack of Context - Some projects could overrun by 25% and could still be considered a success, but some could overrun by 5% and be considered a failure, it’s all about the context of the project which the report fails to understand.
Define the classification of projects in the Chaos report
Type 1 - Project success, Completed on time and within budget, offering all the features and functions specified.
Type 2 - Project Challenged, Project has been completed and is operational but over budget and the time estimate and additionally offers fewer features and functions than originally specified.
Type 3 - Project Impaired - The project is cancelled at some point during the development cycle
Why is the classification of the projects incomplete in the chaos report?
It is incomplete as a project which is within budget and time, but that has less functionality doesn’t fit any category.
A project such as this is common in Software development but is not categorised in this report.
What is the meaning of the term f/a?
f/a is the forecast over actual ratio for a given project aspect.
How does f/a relate to project failure or success?
> 1 would be an under-run, i.e. a project completed before time. The project has delivered more than was expected.
< 1 would be an over-run, i.e. a project completed after time. The project has undelivered.
