Prohibited RR from accepting rebates. It ensured that all customers pay the same rates for shipping products
Pure Food and Drug Act
Outlawed food containing harmful ingredients, required that containers carry ingredient labels, and you had to have proof that your medicine was actually legitimate
Newlands Reclamation Act of 1902
This took the money from the sale of some lands and applied it to make sure other lands are protected
Pinchot-Ballinger Affair
JP Morgan buys public land in Alaska for coal, Ballinger approves of the deal, Pinchot fights the sale, so Taft fires Pinchot
1902 Coal Strike
Strike of coal workers
They wanted a 20% wage increase, nine hour workday, and the right to form a union
The reason why this is so important is because it is the first time that the president got involved with big industry
The workers eventually got a 10% increase and a nine hour workday
Bull Moose Party
A name given to the progressive party formed to support Theodore Roosevelt’s candidacy for the presidency of 1912.
It was called bull moose because of how Teddy Roosevelt came into the election
New Freedom
This was the slogan of Woodrow Wilson’s presidency. It favorite small enterprise desired to break up all trust and shunned social welfare proposals. This was an attack on the triple wall of privilege which included tariffs banks and trusts
Dupuy de Lome
Spanish minister to the United States, he wrote insulting letters that said that McKinley was weak and A want to be politician
Yellow Journalism
Newspapers that were highly exaggerated stories, they will make more money if they keep the people scared which made America want the Spanish American war
Treaty of Paris 1898
This ended the Spanish American war, the US gained almost all of Spain’s colonies including Philippines Guam and Puerto Rico. Cuba was granted independence but the US impose the various restrictions to the new government
Platt Amendment
United States consent was required for all Cuban treaties and trade agreements
Election of 1908
This election was where Teddy Roosevelt basically handed Taft the presidency. He was supposed to be the successor of TR
Election of 1912
Taft was in the grand old party, TR represented the newly formed bull moose party and Woodrow Wilson represented the Democrats. The Republican Party was split by Taft and TR which basically handed Wilson the election
