Q

what are the redox reactions used for?

A

Oxidize NADH2 → NAD. Unloading the hydrogen from the pick-up truck
An electrochemical potential difference (like a rechargeable battery except with H+) is produced across the inner membrane of the mitochondria
e- used to operate tiny biological switches (proton pumps) allow H+ to follow from the matrix to intermembrane space
↑ [H+] in intermembrane space provides the potential to drive synthesis of ATP during chemiosmosis
This is where O2 is used. O2 is the stuff that removes e- from the ETC. When e-, O2 and H+ combine, water will form. O2 is known as the final e- acceptor
Oxidative phosphorylation.
