STAT Flashcards
The test to assess a LINEAR ASSOCIATION between two numeric variables is what?
Correlation
The test to compare the average score on a numeric variable between two (related) groups is what?
Paired T-test
The test to compare the mean score between two INDEPENDENT groups is ?
Independent Samples T-Test
Chi-square tests are applicable to numeric or categorical variables ?
Categorical - not taking about means at all. We’re talking about numbers of observations in each group (proportions or percentages - HOW MANY and what PROPORTION?). We can predict the likelihood of falling within a category.
The distribution of sample means will be approximately normal
Central Limit Theorem
Confidence Interval
Is a type of probability statistic that estimates the location of an unknown population parameter. in other words we don’t know the estimated mean or proportion, so we estimate the likelihood of it to be within a certain range on the basis of sample mean or proportion
Margin of Error
estimate of the amount of difference that we think is possible between our statistic and the corresponding parameter.
Point estimate
single statistic (mean or percentage) that is used as our best estimate of a corresponding parameter. the point estimate’s level of precision is at the cost of its accuracy.
Independent variable
predict or explain a cause or change in outcome
Dependant variable
Outcome
Directional hypothesis
Measure that will be more than or less than a comparison measure. It specifies direction e.g. higher or lower
Non-directional hypothesis
Two measures will be different from each other, but does not specify the direction of the difference
Two tailed test
a hypothesis that predicts a “different from” outcome and does not specify a direction of the effect leads to two-tailed test.
P-Value
Calculated probability of obtaining a result at least as extreme as the one observed if the null hypothesis is true.
