6.4 Flashcards
(9 cards)
permanent magnets
has a magnetic field
electromagnetism
a circular magnetic force around a wire, when a current moves along it
solenoid
a coil of wire with electricity flowing through it
electromagnet
when an iron rod is placed in the center of the coil, making magnetic field become stronger
electric motors
converts electrical energy to kinetic energy (made by placing a solenoid on a swivel between a permanent magnet)
generators
uses kinetic energy to produce electrical energy (made by manually spinning a magnet or solenoid)
dynamos
small magnets are spun around the solenoid, often used to power lights of bicycles
transformers
increases or decreases voltage levels
Permanent vs Electromagnet
1) E- can be turned on and off, strength can be altered by changing current
P- is always on, cannot adjust strength
