Anticyclones and Depressions Flashcards

1
Q

What is a front?

A

Boundary between the low pressure and the high pressure where the warm and cold air meet.

When the cold air pushes the warm air rapidly upwards this causes a warm front

Q

What is low pressure?

A

Low pressure is where the warm air rises, the molecules spread and move freely rising upwards, which becomes lighter.

What is high pressure?

A

Where the cold air condensed and are tightly packed and these push downwards on the earths surface.

Q

What is a depression?

A

Low pressure system where the warm and cold air meet causing heavy rain and clouds. The winds move in an anti-clockwise direction.

Q

Weather conditions associated with the passing of a depression?

A
After cold front- clearing showers
Cold front passes- heavy showers
Warm sector- no rain
Warm front passes- steady rain
Warm front approaches- drizzle
Well in advance depression- no rain

Q

What is an anticyclone?

A

Area of high pressure where air sinks to earths surface. As air sinks it warms so condensation does not occur.( few clouds, clear skies)
They have low wind speeds, widely spaced isobars and stable conditions.
They can occur in winter (frost and icy weather) and summer (dry and calm weather).
