Cell Organelles Flashcards
Nucleolus
contain DNA that issues genetic instructions for synthesizing ribosomal RNA
Nuclear Pore
allows small molecules to pass through the nuclear membrane to send signals in and out of the nucleus
Nucleus
Contains DNA and regulates protein synthesis throughout the cell
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
membrane factory; where integral proteins and phospholipids are formed for the creation of membranes
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
metabolize lipids; synthesize cholesterol, steroid based hormones, trans fats (also absorbs)
Golgi Apparatus
ships and receives proteins; modifies proteins and ships them where they need to be
Mitochondria
breaks down sugar molecules into ATP
Free Ribosome
makes soluble proteins for cytosol and mitochondria
Membrane Bound Ribosome
Synthesizes proteins for cell membrane and lysosomes as well as export them from the cell
Lysosome
recycle and destroy old cell parts and wastes
Plasma Membrane
separates intercellular fluid compartment and extracellular fluid compartment
Nuclear Membrane
maintains shape of the nucleus
Centrosome
cell center; acts as microtubule organizing center; generates microtubules and organizes mitotic spindle fibers
